A Heart for Community: The Story of Mildred Snyder, Notre Dame Housing Resident

For more than two decades, Mildred Snyder has called Notre Dame Housing home—and in that time, she has become known for her commitment to serving others.

Mildred’s journey to NDH began after the passing of her husband. She found herself needing a change, searching for a place that felt safe, supportive, and welcoming. “I wanted to get out of the area I was living in,” she said. “I was looking around—and here I am.” That simple decision, made over 20 years ago, led her to a community where she has found comfort.

Born and raised in Nebraska, Mildred spent her life surrounded by family. She and her husband raised their children, staying actively involved in their lives. “I enjoyed what my children did and going to their activities,” she shared. “We took a lot of trips together—Mt. Rushmore was always my favorite.”

That love of family and community extended into her career. For 27 years, Mildred worked as a school cook at Sherman School, where she prepared meals and offered kindness in equal measures. Her memories from that time are filled with the faces of the children she served—especially one young girl who left a lasting impression. “She was a Diabetic little girl who rode the bus to school. She would eat breakfast and lunch with us and always called me grandma. She gave me hugs every day,” Mildred recalled. “She passed away in fourth or fifth grade, but I’ll never forget her.” For Mildred, the most rewarding part of her job was simple: “The kids. They always made life interesting.”

Even in retirement, Mildred continues to share her gifts with others. She’s a regular volunteer at the NDH Food Pantry, where her skills from years in the kitchen are still put to good use. “Working in the food pantry keeps my skills sharp,” she said. “I enjoy being there and especially like seeing the children who come in with their families.”

At Notre Dame Housing, Mildred is active. “I enjoy everything: the residents, activities, food pantry, staff—they’re all very helpful,” she said. “They offer so much here that you never get bored. I pick and choose what I want to do, and that keeps me active in the community.” She finds joy in programs like the Merrymakers and guest speakers who bring insight to the community.

Mildred’s life—rooted in love, service, and connection—is a testament to what it means to build community, not just live in one. “I keep busy, and I’m social with other people,” she said simply. And in that, she continues to inspire all who know her.
